This is great fun! I hadn’t thought of using it as a textural experience. Thanks for the idea. 🙂

When I did this activity a few years ago with older children, I sifted a fine layer of cocoa powder on top of the flour. That way, when they dropped things in, it showed the spatter pattern clearly. (This wasn’t my idea, but I can’t remember where I got it from)

I meant to do that with the big girl, but the little one had so much fun diving in and digging around I forgot to! Thanks!

OMG. You were at my place last night!
My 4yo suddenly had a fascination with meteors and craters. We had to get onto the internet and look at some craters as well as meteors on YouTube (very disappointing selection on there, I must say). Anyway, I told him that today we could make our own craters, and I was praying that I would find an old post of yours to help me. Fortunately, as the evening went on, he digressed to volcanoes, and I knew you had a post on those – I’ve just come back from the shops with 2L of vinegar 🙂
Now we can do both, you’re a legend!

I remember doing this as a kid and loving it. Thanks for the reminder! My kiddos will love it.

Hello! I’m always looking for simple science ideas. Love the multi-age options. If it’s okay, I’m pinning this on my Pinterest. Thank you! Kristi
