1. I’m guessing because it’s lighter than water. No idea why that would be so though as solids are usually heavier than their liquid form.

I can answer No. 5 I think. It looks like a meat safe- a rudimentary version of a refrigerator. The water (in the top vessel) drips down onto the hessian, evaporates, and the evaporative process keeps the contents inside cool. My grandad used to have one!
